As a result of the studies, it has been reported that tanning is a type of addiction and may occur together with some behavioral health problems.
Although this addiction is also seen in adults, it is frequently observed especially in the young population. However, there is a direct link between the increase in skin cancers and tanning. Although tanning has a positive effect on physical appearance, UV light affects our mood positively by increasing the level of beta-endorphins in the body.
Quick Tan Request
Especially substance addiction (alcohol, tobacco, drug), obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, depression and body-dysmorphic syndrome are frequently observed in tanning addicts. Solarium is the most common method used by those who want to tan quickly.
Effect of Solarium on Skin
Tanning is (unfortunately) still a trend, especially among young people. Ultraviolet lamps used in solariums emit 95% UVA and 5% UVB rays. While UVA rays are more effective in skin aging, UVB rays are more responsible for skin cancers. The longer the exposure to ultraviolet radiation, the greater the risk of developing skin cancer. Another effect of solarium is that it ages the skin faster. Solarium devices that tan quickly or in 10 minutes are very harmful because they emit high doses of ultraviolet light. The use of such devices should be avoided. As the number of annual uses increases, the risk of skin cancer also increases.
Is Solarium Carcinogenic?
The World Health Organization stated that ultraviolet solarium devices cause cancer in many people, and the International Cancer Research Center defined the solarium as a carcinogen in 2009. In other words, it cannot be said that these devices provide healthy tanning. People with fair skin, blond or red hair, light eye color, those under the age of 18, those with multiple moles, those with a history of frequent sunburn in childhood, those with skin cancer or precursor lesions of skin cancer, and those with a family history of skin cancer should not use the solarium. . In many countries, the use of solariums for those under the age of 18 is prohibited. Turkey is conducting a similar study on this issue. While the use of solariums under the age of 18 will be prevented, those over the age of 18 will be allowed to use the solarium consciously by signing a consent form.
