Dear readers, in my previous articles, I tried to give a general idea about what Aesthetic and Cosmetic Dermatology deals with. In my next articles, I will try to give you detailed information about each of the interventions I mentioned before.
First, let’s talk about Botulinum toxin (Botox or Dysport) injections. Botox application is a very effective and safe method for both cosmetic use and regional excessive sweating treatment. In cosmetic application, Botox shows its effect by temporarily relaxing the mimic muscles in the application area. In the treatment of regional excessive sweating, Botulinum toxin shows its effect by temporarily eliminating the function of sweat glands in the application area. The duration of action is similar in both applications.
While the wrinkles formed as a result of the contraction of the mimic muscles (horizontal forehead lines, vertical lines in the middle of the eyebrows and crow’s feet around the eyes) are significantly improved by Botox application, repeated applications and/or other medical interventions are needed to correct the wrinkles observed during the resting of the mimic muscles. On average 3-4 days after the treatment, the muscles that cause wrinkles begin to relax and wrinkles begin to improve within 1-2 weeks. This effect obtained with Botox application can last for 2-6 months on average. This period, which differs from person to person, may be extended with repetitive applications. In some special cases, very rarely, no response may be received with Botox application.
Who cannot be treated with Botox? Botox is not applied to pregnant and lactating people, structural disorders of the eyelid, and people with nervous system and muscle diseases.
If your doctor deems it necessary before the application, your photo will be taken to evaluate the follow-up and response to treatment. Botox is administered as an injection; Pain during the application, temporary loss of sensation, bruising and headache may be observed in the application area after the application. Temporary eyebrow and/or eyelid drooping can be observed quite rarely after treatment, which may last for 2-4 weeks on average. Excessive physical activity, lying face down and applying pressure to the application areas should be avoided for at least 6 hours after the application. In order to increase the effect of the treatment after the application, it is recommended to exercise the relevant mimic muscles for 2-3 hours (frown, brow lift and smile). In order to evaluate the success of the treatment and possible undesirable effects, your doctor will call you for a control 7-10 days after the application.
When applied correctly, Botox is even safer than the drugs that are used very frequently in daily life. Incorrect application technique and/or use of wrong dosage may cause an unacceptable appearance on your face, even if temporarily.
