TMJ (TEMPAROMANDIBULAR JOINT)

The temparomandibular joint is located just in front of the middle ear. Allows movement of the lower jaw. It briefly performs the chewing function of mouth opening and closing.

WHAT IS TMJ DISORDER?

It appears very often. It causes limitation in opening and closing the mouth and headache. The sound comes from the place where the joint is, and even in the future, other people hear this sound. It causes discomfort while performing joint function.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF TMJ DISORDERS?

Clenching or grinding teeth at night causes deformation of the joint, the socket in which it is located.

· A high and mismatched prosthesis; It deforms the joint as a result of excessive pressure on the joint.

One-sided chewing

Malocclusion

Stressful life

A major trauma such as a traffic accident

· Jaw fractures etc.

TMJ TREATMENT

· If you have a habit of bruxism (clenching your teeth); night guard must be made. In other words, the umur causing the problem in TMJ should be removed from the mouth.

· If the problem is a poorly made prosthesis, the prosthesis should be renewed.

· If the problem is unilateral chewing; the patient must be directed to double-sided chewing again. Missing teeth should be treated and replaced.

Sometimes a high filling or malocclusion is the cause of the discomfort. Therefore, whatever the problem is, it must be eliminated.

If there is pain in the joint during this rotation, painkillers, muscle relaxants and steroids are used. If the problem does not disappear, it is useful to consult a maxillofacial surgeon.
