Gynecomastia can be defined as the development of female type breasts in men. This situation can be physiological as well as may occur due to pathological reasons. Physiological periods are in newborn, adolescence and old age. While there is temporary breast enlargement caused by the estrogen hormone transmitted from the mother in the newborn period, it occurs due to the incomplete hormonal balance in adolescence, and due to the decrease in testosterone hormone and increased conversion to estrogen in old age. Examples of pathological causes are chronic liver or kidney diseases, chronic alcoholism, Klinefelter syndrome, androgen hormone secretion disorders, supportive products called anabolic steroids, some drugs (spironolactone, cimetidine, ketoconazole, some antipsychotics, some antiepileptics, etc.), cannabis.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE SURGERY
USG is appropriate to reveal the mammary gland tissue before surgery. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. On average, it takes 3-5 hours. Fat tissue is removed by liposuction. In mild cases, with newly developed VASER or ultrasound-based devices, the breast tissue can be removed by burning along with the adipose tissue. The breast tissue can be removed with a c-shaped incision made under the nipple, and in advanced cases, the breast tissue can be removed with a vertical scar or an inverted T-shaped scar.
WHO CAN HAVE SURGERY?
An underlying cause of gynecomastia is often not found. These are called idiopathic. However, if the existing abnormal breast tissue persists for more than two years after excluding the pathological causes and the patient is over 18 years of age, surgery can be performed. Rapid weight gain and loss should also be questioned before the surgery. The main purpose of the surgery is to reduce the fat tissue and breast tissue.
INFORMATION ABOUT POST-SURGERY
There may be severe pain immediately after the operation, painkillers should be administered. A corset should be used for 1 month after the operation. Water should not touch the wounds for at least 3 days. Your drains will be removed in 1-2 days. Scar reducing ointment and silicone bands can be used for scars. Smoking must be avoided. The wound usually heals well.
RISKS
Blood collection (hematoma) in the early period after the operation is the most feared complication. In the late period, asymmetry and insufficient breast tissue removal can be seen.
