With the developing technology, artificial intraocular lenses have also made progress. Thanks to these Smart Lenses, it has become possible to obtain an uninterrupted and fluent vision at far, medium and close distances. When the natural intraocular lens, which has lost its transparency and elasticity, is replaced with these smart lenses, the patient can get rid of all his glasses for life. However, lifelong cataracts do not develop in patients implanted with a Smart Lens.
You Can Return Home The Same Day After Smart Lens Implantation
Emphasizing that the smart lens implantation operation is painless and seamless, Dr. Özgür Yaşar pointed out that the operation takes about 5-10 minutes and said, “Smart Lens implantation is actually the same as the cataract (phaco) method. Only the type of lens implanted in this process changes. The system is exactly the same. The intraocular lens, which has lost its transparency and or flexibility, is replaced with a Smart Lens with the help of ultrasonic sound waves by entering the eye anesthetized with a drop of 2.8 mm. This method is completely painless and seamless. It takes about 5-10 minutes. 2 hours after the procedure, our patient can open the eye bandage himself and start using the drops given at home. After the procedure, our patients begin to see all distances clearly.” Stating that the smart lens cannot be applied to every patient, Dr. Yaşar added: “We refrain from applying it to patients with problems in the retina, especially in the back of the eye, and/or in patients with a problem in the cornea. For example, we avoid applying it to patients with advanced diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, degenerative myopia, keratoconus, pellucid degeneration, and corneal scarring.”
Light Sensitivity May Occur for a Time After Smart Lens Implantation
Dr. Yaşar shared the points that should be considered after the procedure: “Since the Smart Lens consists of rings, our patients can see halos around luminous or bright objects for a while after the procedure (until the brain gets used to it). This situation lasts for a maximum of 3 months. We call this the process of neurogenic adaptation. First of all, we want water not to be applied to the eyes for the first 4 days. We recommend not touching the eyes for the first 1 month. We ask our patients to use the eye creams we have prescribed for 3 weeks in a disciplined manner, with decreasing frequency according to our recipe, and to come to our patients for routine check-ups on the 1st, 4th and 3rd weeks after the operation. We do not see any harm in returning to work for those working in dusty and non-heavy jobs about 4-5 days after the procedure. Generally, our patients return to their normal lives from the first month and they can even do sports.
Lifetime with smart lens
Dr. Yaşar: “We generally prefer this method in our patients aged 50 and over. This method is ideal in patients with high eye numbers and especially in patients with hyperopia, since multiple glasses are used. Not only hyperopia, but also myopia and astigmatism can be easily eliminated with this method. We can apply this process to almost all eye defects. We also prefer this method in our eligible patients with cataracts. This procedure can also be the gold standard in patients at younger ages and in patients with eye defect that cannot be corrected with excimer laser,” he said, adding: “Smart lens can stay in the eye for life and its replacement is not necessary unless it is necessary. “Patients can see all distances clearly without wearing glasses for the rest of their lives.”
