The shape and function disorders in the nose, which is the first prominent organ on the human face, can cause aesthetic, physiological and psychological problems. Nose aesthetics (rhinoplasty), which is among the most requested aesthetic surgeries, provides great benefits to the person in terms of health as well as visuality. Assoc. Dr. Alper Ural gave information about rhinoplasty surgery and what to consider after.
Rhinoplasty operations are performed both to provide comfortable breathing and to create the nose shape that will be most compatible with the person’s face. Nasal aesthetics, which is among the most used surgeries in terms of health as well as visuality, can also be applied to those who only want aesthetic correction.
Problems in the nose can be caused by different reasons
The problems that exist in the nose are usually caused by excessive developments in bone and cartilage structures, traumas and developmental problems in adolescence. Rhinoplasty operations are mainly; It can be applied to people who have a deformity in their nose, who are not satisfied with the appearance of the nose tip, who have problems and curvature in the nasal bone, who want to make their nose smaller, whose nose is broken, who want to narrow their nose wings, who have shape problems with respiratory problems, whose nostrils are severely asymmetrical or large.
Expectations about aesthetics should be realistic
Nose surgery should not be performed on every person who requests this procedure, and the social and psychological conditions of the patients should be evaluated during the interviews. It should be known that the face will change after rhinoplasty, but not in the normal course of life (a new job, a new lover, etc.). This surgery is not suitable for people who want extreme perfection after the procedure, expect their life to change, think that they will become very beautiful, and look for perfect symmetry by taking pictures of their nose from every angle. However, surgery is not applied to people whose expectations are incompatible with reality and who have psychological problems such as self-perception disorder (somatiform disorder). The most suitable candidates for rhinoplasty are those who are not overly perfectionist; it creates those who expect an improvement and beautification in their external appearance.
Function and aesthetics should be considered together
Some of the patients who apply for rhinoplasty also experience breathing difficulties. Intranasal examination should be performed before the operation, whether the patient has a complaint or not. In rhinoplasty, where functional correction can also be made, if the structure that divides the nose into two, called the septum, bends to one side and narrows the airway, these are removed, if there is an enlargement in the meats called concha, they are reduced, problems such as nasal concha and septum curvature are eliminated.
The most suitable surgical technique for the person is determined
Aesthetic nose surgery is performed using two basic methods called closed and open. These two methods, which are not superior to each other, are considered equivalent and surgeons apply the method they prefer. Patients should only be informed about this issue and surgeons should decide which technique to apply. After evaluating the patient’s nose and face structure in the most accurate way, whichever technique needs to be applied is preferred.
The goal is to reach a natural and beautiful nose.
In rhinoplasty, attention is paid to the preservation of the golden ratio based on the wishes of the patients, and the existing variations are also taken into consideration. In order to better explain this to the patient, plastic surgeons can show the planned nose with various 2D or 3D applications. Although the patient’s wishes are priority, it is necessary to act by considering the proportions of the face. The main goal in rhinoplasty operations should be to achieve a natural nose that is compatible with the face.
Wait for it to take its final shape for evaluation
Even though the changes made during rhinoplasty are very small, these changes can make big perceptual differences in the appearance and expression of the face. One of the issues that should not be forgotten is that the nose is a living organ and it is a special region consisting of bone, cartilage, mucosa and skin, each of which can show different healing properties. It is important to know the possibility that the shape given in the surgery may not be exactly the same after the healing process is completed and the edema has subsided. For this reason, it is recommended to wait at least one year even when a second operation is required. For example, in cases where the nasal skin is thick, it takes a longer process for the nose tip to take shape.
What should be considered after the operation?
1- Smoking should not be used after surgery, as smoking may adversely affect the healing process,
2- Post-operative nose should be protected from trauma and the head should be kept as high as possible to reduce swelling,
3- Avoid drugs, foods and beverages with blood thinning properties,
4- Sports should not be done for a while after rhinoplasty; Activities should be avoided for 7-10 days and heavy sports should be avoided for 1-2 months.
5- Care should be taken not to wet the plaster or splints that protect the nose after the surgery.
6- Glasses should not be used for as long as the doctor recommends, recommended ointments and sprays should be used.
7- In order to accelerate the healing process, regular sleep and nutrition should be taken care of,
